Comparison with Western scales

Since the makam is based on 53-TET, it is impossible to directly tie it to 12-TET Western scales. However, using the 48-TET model, while worse than many other models in approximation,[2] allows for such comparisons.[3]

The approximation of Basit Suzinak within 48-TET would be:[4][5][6]

  • Major (half flat3, flat stroke6, half flat7)
  • Harmonic Major (half flat3, half sharp6, half flat7)

  3. ^ Note: This is because 48 is divisible by 12.
  4. ^ Note: half flat denotes a quarter flat, 25 cents in this case of 48-TET. (Would have been One Holdrian Comma in 53-TET)
  5. ^ Note: flat stroke denotes a 3 quarter flat, 75 cents in 48-TET. (Would have been 4 Holdrian Commas in 53-TET)
  6. ^ Note: half sharp denotes a 1 quarter sharp. 25 cents in 48-TET. (Would have been 1 Holdrian Comma in 53-TET)
